"Good drawing always transcents those trends which beset painting and other forms of visual expression within any period. It is a most personal revelation, the DNA, the proof one way or another of calibre. Good drawing is never just about craft or virtuoso skills, nor the dogged science which leads to feats of portrayal. It is about a show of warmth and understanding, a sensitivity and genuine engagement with subject. It is about discovery, awareness and articulacy and it is the core of creativity." Sonia lawson RA, Arts Review, may 1996.
My work is drawn and painted. Drawing predominates; painting is often brush drawing. Getting to know the subject as part of the drawing process often pulls me in to depict close detail.
I use varying combinations of materials - pencils, charcoal, pastels, watercolours (classic and acrylic), and oils. I love to work on paper, but in oil paint I also work on canvas and wood panel.
I've always loved to draw, and through looking at other artists work and by experimentation, have developed technique over time. My work is much influenced by my work in decorative arts and design. Architecture has long been a favourite subject, carrying into interiors and still life. The landscape, flora and animals around my studio in Argyll western Scotland are also compelling subjects.
I sell most of my work privately, but have also sold at Art Fairs, and through galleries in Edinburgh, London, Los Angeles, and Tighnabruaich.
